Jack of all trades—and master of them all—Sam is the oil in the Front Page machine! Take a peek at a day in the life of our spreadsheet-loving, early-rising, party-organising office manager.
Name: Sam Anderson
Job Title: Office Manager
Sum up your role in three words:
Go. To. Person.
How did you get into office management?
It’s been a hell of a journey to here so far; finished my business degree then spent time in London, Sydney, Edinburgh and Perth (Australia) before landing in Glasgow six years ago. Had my first office management role in Metis, Edinburgh way back in 2002 and have been dipping in and out of agency life in some guise or another since then.
What’s the best thing about it?
I get to deal with the whole company and I’m not just limited to a project team. It’s quite a sociable position really—or maybe that’s just me? Plus the spreadsheets. I need spreadsheets to be organised and l genuinely have a love of them!
And the worst?
When the heating doesn’t work. I’m the first to know. It’s a big building to heat and our old boiler struggles. Luckily I get on very well with our plumber, who’s on speed dial.
What’s your career highlight so far?
The people. I’ve met some great people here at FP Towers and in previous roles. Agency life surely does attract some interesting characters…
What would you be doing if you weren’t office managing?
I’d like to still be in a creative environment, I sometimes think I should have studied photography. Or else something really leftfield like working outdoors, on a farm possibly? I always wanted a pony for Christmas when I was little, in fact I think I still do.
What’s your morning routine?
Get up at far too early o’clock and suffer the hour-long commute in to work. But my sea view from my living room makes up for it – gotta take the rough with the smooth!
First thing you do when you get in the office?
I generally follow in Big Andrew who usually opens up the building, I put the milk he leaves on the stairs away, we shoot the breeze whilst the kettle is boiling, then I fire up the Mac and I’m good to go!
What’s a typical day like?
I have an extensive daily to-do-list, and I take great pleasure in scoring off tasks throughout the day. The role varies throughout the month; some days can be finance-heavy or HR related, others can be event planning or arranging travel. Mainly though, I support 37 folk with whatever they need – of course there are two in particular who get more dedicated attention!
And, most importantly, what’s for lunch?
Beans or tuna with tomatoes. I sound like I have some weird pregnancy craving. Just trying to stay away from the biscuit tin really.
Hometime! What’s on the agenda?
I have two boys at home, so I hear all about their day and enjoy their nonsense. Play with Stella, my blonde bitch who I think I possibly love more than any other family member. Share some wine with my other half; we both share an appreciation of a good merlot. And I always admire the sea view for some inner peace.
And finally, what time are lights out?
Far too late for the time I need to get up. I’m a sucker for a Netflix session and we’re always keen for ‘just one more’ episode before bed!
