Meet Amber – digital designer, craft enthusiast, and the undisputed Mary Berry of Front Page HQ.
Name: Amber Keating
Job title: Digital Designer
Sum up your role in three words:
Getting stuff done
How did you get into Digital Design?
I studied Digital Interaction Design at university, and after graduating almost two years ago I stumbled upon an internship here at Front Page.
What’s the best thing about it?
About the job in general, figuring things out! When you finally get an image looking the way you want or a piece of code to function correctly. But about my time at Front Page in particular, it would be getting involved in Poster Project and slowly learning some print design skills. I think it’s great to always be learning new things!
And the worst?
Not always having enough time in your day!
What’s your career highlight so far?
I’m not sure if it counts as my career but presenting a project that meant a lot to us at an educational conference, focusing on empowering other students!
What would you be doing if you weren’t digital designing?
I’d like to think I’d be baking or cake decorating, although I’d need more practice first! Or doing a craft, either way I think I’d still be doing something creative.
What’s your morning routine?
Sleep my alarm, about 1000000 times. I’m terrible in the morning so I tend to leave everything good to go the night before – outfit picked, brekkie and lunch in the fridge ready to grab, bag packed and most importantly coffee set on a timer so I wake up to a freshly made pot! Do the essentials, and then leave with no time to spare as I run to the train. Luckily, my train is almost always two minutes late!
First thing you do when you get to the office?
Check my emails, make a coffee and eat my breakfast – usually some sort of bircher oats in summer or porridge in winter.
What’s a typical day like?
Busy! I tend to have a bit of an ever-growing list, image sourcing, creating emails, banners, landing pages, e-brochures, assets… and when the opportunity arises, getting to do a spot of UX work! No matter how busy, I try and always make sure I take my lunch break away from the screen for a little bit – it’s good to give your eyes and head a break!
And, most importantly, what’s for lunch?
Usually leftovers, freezer soup or a salad that I’ve thrown together out of veggies in the fridge. Something that I can prep the night before! I try and always bring my lunch, other than the occasional pay day treat.
Home time! What’s on the agenda?
I tend to be pretty busy after work, I’ve been going to college once a week for a sugar paste modelling class. On Wednesdays I go to a sewing club that’s run with Learn to Sew Glasgow, The Real Junk Food Project Glasgow and Milk café to bring woman together, learn sewing, share language skills and have a meal together using intercepted food. There’s usually a gig or two most weeks and maybe a Yelp event. When I get the chance I like to go home and bake. There’s always something to be getting on with.
And finally, what time are lights out?
Ideally about 11 although most nights I’m lucky if it’s before midnight!
